The Book Nook
By Cindy Pace
I am an avid reader (probably why I became an English teacher 30 years ago). Nothing I enjoy better than to share my love of books. That is my goal for this section of the web site. But I can’t do it alone. Please e-mail me about a Christian-themed book you have enjoyed. Write a simple summary (without giving away the ending). I’ll publish it on the site and share it with our congregation. Maybe you’ll even want to swap books with one another.
In case you haven’t discovered Amazon.com (book department), I encourage you to check it out. Their used collection is awesome. I have received used books that appear to have never been handled. In 2 years of purchasing I’ve only received 1 book in poor condition that I paid a penny plus $3.99 shipping. I e-mailed the seller, and I was promptly refunded my cost. Sellers don’t want to ruin their approval ratings. I had withheld my rating until the seller was given a chance to reply. Then I gave him a good rating.
This year I discovered Charles Martin, a Women in Faith author who resides in Jacksonville, Fla. The book When Crickets Cry was recommended to me by a teaching friend from First Baptist. She was so excited about the book that I had to jump on my computer and order a copy. Trust me, I was not disappointed.
(Synopsis from Barnes and Noble):
A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts.
It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he’s restoring at a nearby lake. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest. The stranger understands more about it than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.
Before it’s over, they’ll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry… and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.
That says it in a nutshell. You can read an excerpt here.
I enjoyed his book so much that I began reading all of his other novels: Chasing Fireflies, The Dead Don’t Dance, Maggie, Wrapped in Rain. I highly recommend each book. It brings me joy to share my books with friends ( and my big sister) and have them call me and enthusiastically talk about the book.
Let’s share some good news together. So let me hear from you about what you have read that touches your heart.
