Labor Day Weekend Mission Trip

September 7th, 2011 by Comments off

Congratulations and many thanks to our latest Mission Team which successfully completed another trip to the tornado disaster area of Apison, TN. during Labor Day Weekend. Joining our Mission Team Leader Troy Ayers was his family (Amanda, Trevor, Emma, and Isabella), Greg and Lynn Floyd, Megan Gustafson, Canaan Richardson, Mark and DiAnne Stone, Samantha Stone, David Turner, and David’s daughter, Kendra Turner. Also shown in the group photo are Pastor Mike Shearon and Bill Kuziak of Tunnel Hill United Methodist Church who worked with our group in Apison. Temperatures at the work site were in excess of 100 degrees!

The Missions Committee and the Hartwell First UMC congregation greatly appreciate all these volunteers’ time and hard work! We also owe many thanks to Pastor Mike Shearon and the Tunnel Hill UMC congregation for their kindness and generosity.

Labor Day Weekend Mission Trip, Local Mission dates, and the Wesley Walk

August 30th, 2011 by Comments off
Troy Ayers will be driving either the church bus or van, depending upon the final number of volunteers going, leaving Hartwell (church gym parking lot) at 5:00 pm Friday, Sept. 2, arriving in Tunnel Hill, GA. between 9:00 and 10:00 pm. They will leave Tunnel Hill by about mid-morning Sunday, Sept. 4. The plan is to spend both nights at Tunnel Hill UMC and to work all day Saturday in the nearby tornado disaster area of Apison, TN. (lunch to be provided by Apison residents), then to eat supper somewhere in the local area. Volunteers on this trip are asked to bring enough money to pay for snacks and meals during travel to Tunnel Hill and returning to Hartwell. Currently, we have nine participants (including Troy’s family), and added to this number there will probably be a few young adults. Names of all the participants will be released next week. Any other volunteers interested in going on this trip please let me know ASAP and copy to <ayersetching@yahoo.com>.
Dale David reports that our local Missions / Habitat Partnership project on the Hunnicutt house will begin soon. Interested volunteers are asked to save the following dates for possible workdays: Thurs., Oct. 6 and Thurs., Oct. 13 (for retirees and anyone not working on those weekdays who wants to volunteer); also Sat., Oct. 8
and Sat., Oct. 15. Final details including directions to the house and work hours will follow soon.
The 29th Annual Wesley Walk at Stone Mountain will be on Saturday, October 22, 2011. We will be taking the church bus or van (depending again upon the size of our group), leaving at approximately 6:15 am, and returning by mid-afternoon. Donations to this walk benefit the Wesley Community Centers of South Atlanta which provide much needed services to low income seniors in that area. This year, we are asking that donors consider making their contributions in memory of Sue Kesler who with her husband, Jim was a past Wesley Walk Coordinator for our church. Also, if anyone would like to donate to this worthy cause in memory of Charles and Elizabeth Williams, they are deceased members of our congregation who were on the Wesley Centers Board of Directors involved in organizing the very first Wesley Walk in 1982. Please make check payable to HFUMC “for” Wesley Walk. This will be my 20th Wesley Walk as Coordinator; it would really be great to have a large group participating this year! Any volunteers wanting to participate please email me at <cbpace@gmail.com>.
Thanks again for your kind support of our church missions.

Upcoming Mission Trip Labor Day Weekend…

August 11th, 2011 by Comments off

There is a mission trip planned for the tornado disaster area we visited in June and July, for Labor Day Weekend. As we did before before, the plan is to stay at Tunnel Hill United Methodist Church in Tunnel Hill, GA., then work in nearby Apison, TN. Troy Ayers is planning to take the YAMS, possibly driving the church bus or van. Older adults and high school students over age 16 (with parent permission) are invited. Interested volunteers please contact Troy (ayersetching@yahoo.com) or me (cbpace@gmail.com) for more details.

Thanks so much for your support of our church’s missions!

July 16 Mission Trip to Apison By Charles Pace

July 27th, 2011 by Comments off

On the morning of July 16, 2011, our Mission Team discovered that the Volunteer Coordination Center in Ringgold, GA. was closed due to construction projects not yet approved and cleanup jobs completed. A representative from the Center had indicated by telephone and emails that a job would be available to us in Ringgold, but did not advise that the Center would be closed; her instructions were not complete, and she could not be contacted on Saturday, July 16.

Fortunately, our host where we stayed at Tunnel Hill United Methodist Church, Pastor Mike Shearon, had a backup plan for us: Helping to cut and clean trees and limbs in nearby Apison, TN. where destruction was even worse than in Ringgold, GA. A resident of Apison, TN. named Jojo Macatiag had organized a base camp in Apison which he calls “Open House” where volunteers can find out where work is available, get directions to the job site, and possibly even borrow tools if needed. Lunch was provided to us and other volunteers at base camp by local residents.
Joining me on this mission trip of were Dale David, Greg Floyd, Lynn Floyd, Mike Gordon, Carl Griffin, and Sharon Habel. Also, working with us in Apison, TN. were Pastor Mike Shearon, Bucky Strickland, and Alison Strickland from Tunnel Hill United Methodist Church. We felt a connection with the victims in Apison, TN., and believe that God sent us there. Many thanks to these volunteers for their service to our church’s missions, and to members of our congregation who supported our mission team with your donations and prayers.
